A Detailed Itinerary for 1-Day Gorilla Trekking

1-Day Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, is one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in the world. This 1-day itinerary is designed for those starting their adventure in Kigali, Rwanda, offering a thrilling day in Uganda’s misty mountains.

04:00 AM: Early Morning Pickup in Kigali to start 1 Day Gorilla Trekking

Your driver will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali. Be prepared for an early start to make the most of your day. Enjoy a scenic 4-hour drive through Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Along the way, you will cross the Rwanda-Uganda border via either Cyanika or Katuna, depending on your destination in Bwindi.

07:30 AM: Arrival at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for 1-Day Gorilla trekking

You’ll arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The park rangers will greet you at the trekking headquarters and provide a briefing on safety and etiquette while observing the gorillas.

09:00 AM: Start of Gorilla Trekking

Begin your trek into the dense forest of Bwindi. The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location that day. The terrain can be challenging, with steep and muddy paths, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Experienced guides and rangers will accompany you as you track one of the habituated gorilla families. Along the way, enjoy the beauty of the rainforest, which is home to a variety of bird species, primates, and other wildlife.

11:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Gorilla Encounter

Once the gorilla family is located, you will spend an unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as they go about their daily lives—eating, playing, grooming, and interacting with one another. This encounter is the highlight of your trip, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be up close to these magnificent creatures.

1:30 PM: Return Trek and Lunch

After your time with the gorillas, begin the trek back to the park headquarters. The descent is usually faster, providing another chance to appreciate the unique flora and fauna of Bwindi. Upon arrival at the park office, enjoy a packed lunch (usually provided by the tour company) while reflecting on your experience.

2:30 PM: Drive Back to Kigali

After a refreshing break, you will begin your return journey to Kigali. As you drive through the beautiful countryside, this is a good time to rest or take in the views again. Depending on the timing of your trek, you may make brief stops along the way to visit local communities or craft markets.
