Overview
3 Days Congo Lowland gorillas and Nyungwe chimpanzee tour is a complete primate trekking adventure package. Visit and explore the Eastern Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park and chimpanzees in the tropical Nyungwe Forest National Park, Southern Rwanda.
Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of the biggest D.R. Congo biggest parks encompassing over 6000sq.km of land area. It is here where you will enjoy lowland gorilla trekking, encounter the lowland gorillas in the wild and take photos. Nyungwe Forest NP is a special primate park in the Southern province of Rwanda, home to 13 species of primates and includes more than 500 chimpanzees.
Detailed tour
Day 1: Pick up at a hotel / airport & drive to Bukavu city
Leave Kigali for Bukavu through the Chagungu border in a full time 4WD vehicle. You will drive through Butare but a short stopover will be made to allow you to visit the National Museum and Nyanza King’s palace and then have lunch.
Set off for Bukavu through Nyungwe Forest; enjoy spectacular views of the forest and some primates plus Lake Kivu. You will cross to the D.R. Congo through the Chagungu border and proceed to your pre-booked accommodation.
Day 2: Track the lowland gorillas of Kahuzi-Biega & drive back to Nyungwe forest
You will report to briefing center in Kahuzi-Biega to get highlights on dos and don’ts for lowland gorilla trekking. At 8am, leave the briefing point with an experienced Kahuzi-Biega NP guide to search for the Eastern lowland gorillas in the wild and expect to spend 2-5 hours.
Enjoy one hour face-to-face with these charming apes, take photos and you will return to meet your driver guide. Leave the accommodation in Congo after lunch and drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park for dinner and overnight stay in the lodge.
Day 3: Trek the chimpanzees of Nyungwe Forest & depart
A tasty cup of tea/coffee grown from Rwanda and after, you will head to Uwinka reception/Cyangugu for briefing about rules for chimpanzee tracking. The park guides assigned to your groups will be the one leading you inside the forest to search for chimpanzees 2-4 hours trek.
Chimpanzees are special primates and the closest human relatives in the wild. Their DNA is over 98% similar to that of humans. Other primates living in the verdant Nyungwe Forest will be spotted and include olive baboons, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, black and white colobus monkeys, plus birds –the park supports up to 310 species of forest and Albertine rift endemic birds.
When you get back, settle for a delicious lunch meal, relax and check out. Start your 6-7 hours’ journey from Nyungwe Forest NP to Kigali, marking the end of 3 days tour in Rwanda and Congo.
