Overview
This 6 days Virunga double gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hike will involve two main activities that are mountain gorilla trekking which is done twice and the experience will not be the same because you will be trekking different gorilla families and using different trails though in the same park and another activity is hiking Nyirangongo volcano which is among the Virunga massif, the hike to the summit will be an amazing one because you have a chance of looking at the boiling lava on the summit.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
When you immediately land in Kigali, you are going to meet the company driver guide who will brief you and then transfer you to the hotel for lunch if you still feel energetic you can head for a city tour in Kigali.
Day 2: Transfer to D.R. Congo from Kigali
Wake up at the lodge, have breakfast then start on your drive to the Democratic Republic of Congo via the Grande Barrier border you are going to stop over at the Virunga tourism offices for some clearances then you will continue with the drive to the hotel. Check-in gets some refreshments then rest for the next day’s activity.
Day 3: Gorilla trekking
On this first day of gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park, you will wake up very early in the morning have lunch pack your lunch then drive to the park Headquarters for a briefing about gorilla trekking. It will be such an amazing experience because when you find one of the gorilla families, you will be given a chance to stay in their presence for one hour as you watch their behavior.
Day 4: Second gorilla trekking day
On the second day, you are going to wake up and have breakfast then you will be driven to the park headquarters for a briefing and then led to the forest to search for mountain gorillas. Today’s experience is going to be different from the one you did previous day because you will trek a different gorilla group and what you missed seeing will be seen on this day. Don’t forget to pack lunch for you are going to spend several hours in the forest.
Day 5: Ascend Nyiragongo mountain
Hiking this mountain is one of the adventurous activities carried out in Congo. Waking up very early in the morning is a mandate because hiking starts as early as 10:00am after briefing at the starting point.
After that, hiking to the summit will start immediately and it going to take quite some hours to reach the summit but when you finally come to reach there, will have a look at lake Kivu, the green vegetation of Virunga volcanoes and the boiling lava lake at Nyiragongo summit.
Day 6: Descend and transfer to Kigali city
Wake up in the morning, have a look at the lava lake for the last time, take photos and descend to the starting point meet your driver and drive back to Kigali for your flight back home.
