Overview
Spend 6 days exploring D.R. Congo’s unique apes, home to both lowland and mountain gorillas. This tour combines a visit to the Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks.
Kahuzi-Biega National Park offers excellent eastern lowland gorilla trekking and in D.R. Congo, you will hike to the top of the most violent Nyiragongo.
Detailed Tour
Day one: Pickup and proceed to the hotel in Kigali
You will meet the driver guide for pick up and travel to the hotel. Set off for a short Kigali city tour to explore cultural and historical sites within the city, especially Kigali genocide memorial site, local markets and art museum.
Day two: Kigali- Kahuzi-Biega National Park in eastern Congo
Depart Kigali for Kahuzi-Biega N/Park, a 6000sq.km park in South-Kivu region of D.R. Congo. Cross the Rusizi I border early and get cleared then proceed to check in at the lodge IN Bukavu or around Kahuzi-Biega NP camping.
Day three: Kahuzi-Biega NP lowland gorilla trekking safari
Briefing about the dos and don’ts for lowland gorilla trekking will be the first thing to be done in the morning at Kahuzi-Biega NP offices. Only habituated lowland gorilla families will be visited today and with the lead of Kahuzi-Biega National Park guide, expect to spend at least 2-5 hours on a search for the massive Eastern Lowland gorillas.
To observe and learn how the lowland gorillas behave, their body gestures and photography, there will be one hour that your group is entitled to. After tracking the lowland gorillas, you will have adequate time chilling in the lodge or in the evening, visit the community.
Day four: From Kahuzi-Biega to Virunga National Park (D.R. Congo)
Leave Bukavu for Virunga NP and a boat ride will be enjoyed connecting you via Lake Kivu to Goma. You will be picked and transferred to a hotel for a night stay till the following day when you will set off for Nyiragongo volcano hike in the Virunga NP.
Day five: Ascending to the 3,470m Mount. Nyiragongo summit
Enjoy a delicious breakfast early in the morning and you will meet the driver for transfer to Kibati offices. Ascending to Nyiragongo volcano begins at 9:00 am and you will be led by an experienced guide.
This is one of the most powerful volcano mountains in the world with multiple eruptions and recorded the very recent eruption in May 2021. A long evening and night observing the bubbling Lava Lake at the summits won’t leave you the same way you came.
Day six: Descending from Nyiragongo summit. Leave Kibati station for Kigali city.
Start sloping down to Kibati ranger post where the driver guide will be waiting you from and he will take you back to Kigali. This will mark the end of 6 days Congo lowland gorillas and Nyiragongo hike.
